Life, the Universe, and Everything

A few new things:
Saturday two weeks ago I graduated from university. Cool, eh? I'm glad I'm done with my B.A., but no way am I done with uni for good! I plan on going back next term to do an M.A., probably a brand-new programme called Literature, Culture and Media. Yes, I know, it sounds exciting!

Also, I am moving house in just over two weeks. Boyfriend and I will get the keys on April Fools, and no, it is not a joke. Trés excited to get out of the student studio flat, of which I have grown rather tired. Having to go outside and walk down two flights of stairs to go to the laundry room; having the kitchen in the bedroom. Not exactly a place you want to live in for more than two years.

I have started knitting again. I joined a knitting club with the women of my in-law family in January and we meet twice a month. Since then I have knit a hat, and almost finished a pair of knee-high socks. Pretty cool socks, though I say so myself! Warm, too. Next up: leg warmers.

Cold

It is the middle of the summer and I have a cold. A serious one, complete with a headache, dizziness, sneezing and stuffed/runny nose. The irony would (figuratively) kill me, if the stuffed nose hadn't (figuratively) done that already.
It looks like I will spend the first weekend of August, which the majority of Icelanders spend at outdoor festivals in the countryside, more often than not getting drunk (people my age, at least!), at home. Indoors. Resting. Probably in bed. Watching TV, reading, sleeping... actually, it doesn't sound so bad! I've travelled enough this summer; I actually just got back from a week-long holiday in Edinburgh and London, so I'm quite glad to spend this long weekend at home.

2010

Happy new year!

I forgot to make any resolutions on New Year's Eve, but I've thought of some guidelines to try to go by.

1. Ignore all news about IceSave. I'm sick of it, it should have been finished ages ago. I'm sick of people ranting about it, I'm sick of the media constantly "commenting" on it, I'm sick of politicians going round and round in circles saying the other side is wrong. Just get it over with! Start doing something useful!

2. Learn from my mistakes. I.e. avoid hangovers at all costs. Which should not be hard because I know how to avoid them: NOT drink (too much...).

3. Be a good student, finish my thesis before the deadline (which will be sometime in the late autumn) and graduate when planned.

4. Increase the variety of dishes to cook for supper.

5. Eat more vegetables.

I seriously recommend

that if you have been living under a rock for the past year and have NOT seen the Potter Puppet Pals, watch this:

Then read this:

I guarantee that you will keel over with laughter.

A stanza from "Expostulation and Reply"

As much annoyance as William Wordsworth has caused me, I do enjoy some of his poetry. A poem composed in 1798, "Expostulation and Reply," is often quoted, usually appropriately:

'The eye it cannot choose but see,
We cannot bid the ear be still;
Our bodies feel where'er they bee.
Against or with our will.
...

True story.

I'm getting a new haircut next week and I'm feeling inspired by this one. Whether I'll be brave enough to have my hair cut exactly like that is another story...

Happy August!

It's been a while since I last blogged, and since I've been hounding my mother to update her own blog which she did for the first time in almost 4 months, I thought it would be a bit hypocritical of me not to write something myself.

Not that I have any big news. Well, I did have another seizure - only six days after the other one! And for no apparent reason, except maybe that I was a bit tired from having pumped air into a double air mattress, but under normal circumstances that's not enough to give you a seizure. It so happened that my doctor had gone on summer holiday the same day as I called the office to ask about phone appointments, so I didn't talk to her until a couple of weeks ago. She upped my dose a tiny bit and I can't really do anything different, just keep on behaving and taking my meds on time.

Alina, my bestest German friend, has just left after a two-week stay with me here in Reykjavík. It was awesome to have her here, although I was forced to go to work during the second week (it's kinda busy at the shop this time of year, and I could really only afford one week off), while poor Alina could barely walk for three days because she hurt her toes when she accidentally kicked a step in the entrance of Karamba last weekend. Apart from that, we had a good time. We went on the Golden Circle tourist trip (see above photo, taken by Gullfoss), took my little sis to the Blue Lagoon and rubbed some white mud on our faces, barbecued hamburgers and bananas on a little disposable grill on my balcony, went to rock concerts (see other photos), saw Harry Potter 6 and Brüno at the cinema, ate out, cooked chicken and pasta, had take-out pizza, went to Vesturbæjarlaug and sat in the hot tubs for about an hour and then got some delicious ice cream afterwards, Alina bought the coolest 66°North woolen jumper which made me green with envy (too exxxxpensive for me!), and took photos of some creepy cats in the area by the Pond. Sigrún Ugla bonded with her again, two years after they last met, when they absolutely loved each other. However, Sigrún Ugla was only 3 then and barely remembers anything from that time. She was surprised to see that Alina has a video of her jumping and shouting on her mobile phone! Actually, I was surprised, too, as it's been two years. Cute, though. The background on my mobile is a picture of Sigrún Ugla from a year and a half ago, so I guess I can't say much.
We went to Innipúkinn this weekend, the music festival that has been held on Verslunarmannahelgin (first weekend of August) for the people of Reykjavík who can't be bothered to go to the outside festivals in the countryside, and prefer having lots of fun, but sleeping in their own beds and take showers in the morning. The middle two photos we took there, and the last one we took when we had got back home on Saturday night, completely exhausted after the awesome FM Belfast concert.
In other news, I am happy because I got a bunch of money back from the Icelandic IRS, and bought myself a new dress at Spúútnik to celebrate, as well as two books and two DVDs from Tiger (it's ok, everything at Tiger is cheap!). I bought all this without feeling any guilt. I needed a new dress, and I really wanted to buy four more books, but I resisted. There are so many books I have to read this semester, and I've already started one, but I think I will not have time to do anything but read for school from September to December. I'll probably be working every day all August, and overtime, too. It'll be exhausting but fun. I get to be the überbitch! Veeeery excited about that. Sometimes you get tired of being nice and pleasant, and who better to take the frustration out on than annoying teenagers?

Till next timea
hugs,
Book Lady (a.k.a. Gámagribban)
